From Sri Lanka with love
Last week we discussed what makes tea sachets so much better than tea bags. You ended up with a bunch of tea on your kitchen counter, but also a head full of knowledge about the full flavor you can get from whole leaf tea like ours. Isn’t reading a tea blog rewarding? So this time around we wanted to show you a couple of photos from one of the spots where our tea is put into those sachets. We like to pack the tea as close to the source as possible, and since a number of our teas are grown in Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), that’s where this particular factory is. Time to bag the tea bags
I’m not going to name names here, but you know that bag of tea you’ve had in the pantry for a couple of months? The one you bought because Blue Raspberry Delight tea sounded fantastic as you cruised the grocery store aisles? Take it out, cut it open, and dump it on your kitchen counter. Let me tell you what you’re looking at: tea dust. At least, that’s what we call those miniscule particles of tea that came out of the bag. Now grab the nearest sachet of tea you have — you know what I mean by “sachet,” right? Like a bag, but really more of a pyramid-shaped pouch, that probably cost you a bit more. This article was written by Julie Deardoof from the Chicago tribune and is a good re-fresher on what you need to know about Tea… MYTH: Tea comes in many varieties. False! Only one plant gives us tea leavesóthe Camellia sinensis. The differences in color and flavor among the three basic typesóblack, green and oolongódepend on how the leaves are processed. For black tea, the most popular type of tea in the U.S., the tea leaves are exposed to air, or allowed to oxidize. Green teas are less processed to preserve the green color and delicate flavor. LOVE!! nitedreamer reviewed September 5, 2008 at 4:35 pm I’ve tried two of the two leaves and a bud flavors- the Orange Sencha and the Peppermint. The Orange Sencha was okay, but the peppermint is awesome.†It’s my splurge tea, my “I want a little pampering this morning tea”, my luxury in a cardboard box tea. You can tell it’s quality by your first peek at the tea bags- nylon drawstrings that house whole leaves of tea, not just powder. The tea bags are strong enough to make two big cups (I brew my tea in beer mugs, so I’m guessing I get about the equivalent of 4 cups?). This is pricey tea, but it is well worth it.†One cup, and you won’t want to go back.
