Blended to perfection, or close to it
Did you know that nothing is ever really static in the tea industry? Think about it for a minute – every year gardens grow more camellia sinensis, and those “two leaves and a bud” that are plucked for your daily cuppa’ tea are different from year to year. In fact, it’s a lot like wine and grapes, but few people who don’t work in the tea business probably think about this while they’re steeping tea leaves. So it makes sense that our founder and CEO, Richard Rosenfeld, spends a lot of time tasting different blends of tea. “It can be very difficult – every season we have to get new tea. Our Assam this year was particularly challenging, because two primary producers decided to stop producing organic tea,” he says. “We needed to find organic Assam at other gardens, and that’s … Continue reading
All about Assam
“Assam is the tea I am the most proud of in our entire range,” two leaves and a bud CEO and founder Richard Rosenfeld says. “It’s a great sweet, tippy, malty, but organic Assam, and it’s an ongoing project with me. With every flush, our Assam gets better.” Where is Asssam? What makes Assam what it is? Let’s start with the region of Assam. Look on a map — Assam, India, is in the far northeast of the country. Assam is in the Brahmaputra River Valley, which means the water that flows through Assam is from the Tibetan plain, and the soil is rich with nutrients. The tea grown there is in intense heat and humidity, much like in a greenhouse. It’s hard to write about Assam without comparing it to that other famous tea named after a region in … Continue reading

Not having to measure anything. I knew very little about tea before getting a job with two leaves and a bud, but it’s a steep learning curve. (Steep. Ha! But pun not intended.) One of the first items in the office I met was the little blue scale that we use to measure out loose tea. “Aim for about 2.5 grams per cup of tea,” Bess told me on my first day, putting a pinch of tea onto the scale. It turns out, each of our sachets contains about 2.5 grams of tea … Continue reading

Two leaves and a … heh, heh
Several weeks ago we had a job opening and ads placed in local newspapers. Soon after we received a call from someone who was interested because they thought we were a medical marijuana dispensary. It makes sense — “bud” is one of hundreds of references to pot, and ever since our state of Colorado legalized the sale of medical marijuana, dispensaries have been opening at a steady rate, including three in the town of Aspen, not far from our office. (A friend of mine noted only Aspen would have more medical marijuana dispensaries than pharmacies.) Whoever answered the phone was good at explaining that we sell tea, not Cannabis. And we all shared a laugh after she hung up. And then we shared another laugh when someone walked in our front door last week and asked the same question. So … Continue reading
