Steep Time – How much is enough?
We get asked all the time, “how long do I steep this?” It seems to be an age-old question and seems to elude many of us who are not native to tea-growing countries. Early in my better tea drinking days, I would return from Sri Lanka with wonderful tea only to find that it just did not taste the same at home – It always was too dense, too strong, over steeped! I am just sitting this morning with a well steeped cup of two leaves and a bud Darjeeling tea (an unabashed plug) thinking that I’ve been meaning to post on this for, like, years. So finally…http://www.twoleavesandabud.com/n_Steep-time—how-much-is-enough-38.html . Please let us know your steeping experiences and what works and doesn’t work for you. Cheers!

Spring Skiing!
It may seem funny this time of year, but for those of us who love the mountains (montanophiles? is that a word?) late spring is the best time to get up high and ski! This weekend was cold and rainy in Basalt which means cold and snowy(!) at the top of Independence Pass, 30 miles east of here. We hiked and skied 2 peaks on Memorial Day – Geissler Peak and an unnamed one at 13,500 feet. That’s me slogging up the second peak on my skis and skins. It was steep and slow but beautiful once you got there! Don’t forget the sunblock! Yep, I got fried the day before on a really cloudy day so I have big white sunblock blotches but feeling great today. In fact, I am enjoying a cuppa’ our latest crop of Assam tea … Continue reading
Communting by bicycle
I have been hiring a Brompton folding bike every time I go to London and, I confess, lusting after one for years. Last week I finally broke down and purchased one and… love it! Number one: It is a great way to get around. Saves gas, energizes me, it just is a lot of fun. Number two: Everyone loves it. In Chicago for the National Restaurant Show this past weekend – Folks at the booth next door made me open it up and wanted me to ride it in the show. At an outdoor cafe, I actually received a standing ovation for folding it up! (Granted, that table had had quite a bit to drink…) On the street I was asked at least 5 times, “where did you get that?” Anyway – get a folder – too much fun!

Siphons for Coffee!
Just returned from the Specialty Coffee Show in Atlanta. Not too much in the way of super-exciting new product; the show was more about incremental change. The biggest thing (in this writer’s humble opinion): Coffee Siphons. I predict different forms of siphons will be the rage in coffee shops within just a few years. (It will take time for the technology to disseminate.) Some of you may know that a year ago Starbucks purchased a controlling interest in the Clover machine. Clover’s concept was to “add the artistry of a latte to basic American coffee” and to allow the consumer to choose what sort of coffee they would like fresh brewed. For those of you who have not seen one of these machines, imagine a semi-automated french press. Very cool; very good coffee. The siphon, however, is much much cooler … Continue reading
lorem ipsum
One of the many things that I love about two leaves and a bud is the graphic design opportunities. We spend a lot of time and energy designing packaging to educate, explain tea, and just be fun. When designing with text, we use “placeholder” text that is automatically generated and always starts with “lorem ipsum.” I always thought this was just nonsense… Wrong! On today’s “word of the day” site (www.wordsmith.org) I learned that this is actually the beginning of a quote from Cicero’s “The Extremes of Good and Evil.” Who knew? – http://www.lipsum.com/ that
